Parasites

Parasites & how to eliminate them

Do you suffer from any of the following:
• Frequent bouts of diarrhoea
• Abdominal cramps or pains
• Intestinal gas and bloating
• Weight Loss (without trying)
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Fatigue
• Blood or mucus in your stools

Parasite Infection
If you have answered yes to two or more of these questions you may have an intestinal parasite. Treating the symptoms alone will not eliminate the parasite infection. The parasite itself needs to be eliminated. Read on to find out more about parasites and how your health care professional can diagnose and help you to treat them. Many people are unaware that they have parasites. These can cause varying symptoms, from gastrointestinal problems to chronic fatigue.

What Are Parasites ?
Parasites are organisms that live within the gastrointestinal tract and other parts of the body, and are much more common than most people realise. They grow by feeding off your body. They can range from worms, which may be visible like pin worms or tape worms, or they may be invisible, microscopic organisms such as Giardia Lamblia.

How Do You Get Parasites?
Parasites are all around us in raw and undercooked food and even in water supplies. They can be transmitted by insects, pets and people due to poor hygienic practice. They can be transmitted via faeces or when sewage contaminates the water supply. The increase in world wide travel is also thought to be a factor.

Parasitic Infection Symptoms
Most common symptoms of parasite infestation are diarrhoea and abdominal pain, nausea, gas, bloating, foul smelling stools, weight loss, fever, headaches, constipation, blood or mucus in the stools and fatigue. Some other health problems can result in disturbed digestion due to the toxins produced by the parasite. For example, muscular pain, joint pain, chronic fatigue, anaemia, allergies, sleep disturbance, depression and impaired immunity. Irritation to the lining of the intestines by the parasitic infection can cause "leaky gut" syndrome, which enables toxins and undigested food molecules to pass through the intestines. This can result in food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease.

Three of the most common parasitic infections are:-1 Blastocystis Homins -may cause such symptoms as chronic fatigue, arthritis and diarrhoea. It can be transmitted by contaminated food or water, unclean surfaces, hospital tube feeds and surgery.

Dientamoeba Fragilis -can cause diarrhoea and blood in the stool. It can be transmitted bycontaminated water or by ingesting pin worms from contaminated food.3 Giardia Lamblia -these parasites adhere to the upper part of the intestine via a suckingdisc. They can cause constipation, diarrhoea, malabsorption of nutrients, stomach bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea and greasy stools. They are transmitted via cysts which can beingested from tap water, food or faeces.

Testing For Parasites
Many symptoms of parasitic infection are similar to other health problems. In order to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment it is important to test for parasites. This can be done by carrying out a comprehensive parasitology test available via your healthcare practitioner of The Healing Touch. This test uses a stool sample and is the most effective way to diagnose a parasitic infection.

Natural Antiparasitic Preparations
Artemesia (known as wormwood) is a well known herb which the Chinese have been using successfully for many years to treat malaria. Not only is artemesia very effective but it does not have the side effects associated with many anti-malarial drugs. Artemesia can be very effective against other parasitic infestations. Other natural botanicals which can be used in an anti-parasitic regime include berberine, grapefruit seed extract, gentian, quassia, blackwalnut and garlic. A natural herbal preparation containing these herbs is available from your health care professional.

Duration of Supplementation
It is important when taking natural antiparasitic agents that they are taken for at least three months. This ensures that not only the adult parasites are removed but the eggs are too.

Parasites and Children
Children are very prone to picking up parasites and passing them on to one another. If you have a child with a parasitic infection and you wish to use natural methods of eradication, you may wish to choose a herbal tincture such as blackwalnut, which is easily administered.
